Homeopathy and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Injury and Repetitive strain may cause
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, but there are
other causes that may need a more
constitutional homeopathic approach.

What is TTS?
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is brought on by compression of the tibial nerve as it passes through the tarsal tunnel. It is characterized by a range of symptoms including tingling, electric shock-like sensations, radiating pains, burning, chilliness, numbness, “pins and needles”, cramping, heightened sensitivity and a build-up of fluid in the foot.

What causes it?
Over exertion and standing for lengthy periods can make these symptoms worse, which is why it often an occupational hazard and also affects athletes. There are many possible causes for TTS and it is always helpful to know the etiology, as this will have an impact on how you deal with it.

For instance a pinched lumbar or sacral nerve can lead to TTS and this would be best addressed by visiting a chiropractor or osteopath. Another factor is having flat feet, where orthotics may be needed. If the complaint came on after taking a new pharmaceutical drug then it could be iatrogenic (a side effect of the medication.)

A common cause of TTS is injury, such as a broken or sprained ankle or a repetitive strain type injury that has affected the joint, muscles or tendons.

Why choose Homeopathy for TTS?
Homeopathy
can be of great help and bring about healing that is rapid, effective and safe.

Injuries
The four most commonly needed injury remedies for TTS are Arnica, Hypericum, Rhus tox and Ruta.

Arnica is a great trauma remedy for bruising and shock. Use when the area feels weak, strained and swollen and the pain is stitching.
Hypericum is the specific for injury to a nerve with shooting pains.
Rhus tox is a wonderful remedy for sprains in general, and is particularly helpful if you have stinging pain in your left heel.
Ruta
is the go-to remedy for damage to ligaments, tendons, the tendon sheath and the tarsal joint. The area feels bruised and there may also be paralysis of the tarsal joint.

Other factors that can reduce the space in the Tarsal Tunnel include:

Bone spurs
These can be relieved by supplementing with Calc fluor 6x (tissue cell salts) 4 pills three times a day ( unlike all the other remedies mentioned here that are best taken on an “as needed” basis.)  Another homeopathic specific for bone spurs is Hekla lava.

Ganglions
Ganglions on flexor tendons respond well to Ruta.

3 Golden rules for using homeopathy at home

  • Match your symptoms to the most similar remedy, having a homeopathy kit helps.
  • Take one dose. Only repeat if you had benefit, but later your symptoms returned.
  • Stick to a 30c potency (strength) for home use.

Read the following descriptions to see if one of these remedies closely matches what you are experiencing.

Apis – electric shock through toes, with redness, heat, swelling, stinging pains

Arg nit – easy bending and straining of tarsal joint with violent, throbbing pain

Belladonna – burning, tingling, itching, right sided, worse walking

Hepar sulph – stiff, numb, drawing, burning

Lachesis – drawing (pulling) pain, worse on the left side

Ledum – swollen feet, rigid on waking, pain on stepping

Lycopodium – pricking pain in the heel, sprained sensation, burning feet, soles are painful, worse for walking

Merc viv – swelling, right foot, painful to touch(consider having dental amalgams removed if this remedy works well for you, as it may indicate that you have mercury poisoning.)

Nat mur – bruised, gone to sleep sensation

Sulph – Burning and itching in the soles. Swelling of the feet – from warmth of the bed. Great heaviness in the feet, especially in the tarsal joints. Coldness and stiffness of the toes, with tingling of the tips.

Constitutional treatment may be needed
Sometimes TTS is part of a wider, systemic symptom picture. For instance there could be a generalized tendency to benign tumors and cysts or varicose veins. There may be signs of pre-diabetes, or diabetes, and neuropathy. These causes are more complex and are best treated by a professional and experienced homeopath. The homeopath will work in depth with you to find a remedy that addresses the whole picture, not just the TTS.

Homeopathy and ovarian cysts

Homeopathy and Ovarian cysts
Finding a great remedy for you depends on having all the pieces of the puzzle. Special thanks to Horia Varlan for the image.

Ovarian cysts are sacs of fluid surrounded by a thin membrane. They are generally benign and often resolve without any treatment. In fact many women will live with them and not be aware of their presence at all.

Problems arise when they grow so large that they put pressure on another area, such as the bladder, the bowel or the vagina. This can cause pain and difficulties when urinating, defecating or having sex. There may also be a sense of fullness in the abdominal region. Sometimes there will be menstrual irregularities and some women also experience pregnancy-like symptoms of breast tenderness, nausea and even vomiting.

If an ovarian cyst bursts women may experience very severe pelvic or abdominal pain or fever and vomiting. In extreme cases it can cause the sufferer to go into full blown shock. In these instances immediate medical care is essential.

In less urgent cases the best approach to ovarian cysts is two fold:

Firstly, make life style changes. Switch to a non-hormonal form of contraception or family planning such as a Lady comp or barrier methods. Also avoid xenoestrogens, these are substances that mimic estrogens and are implicated in ovarian cysts and PCOS (poly cystic ovarian disease). Here is a checklist of things to avoid:

food or water heated in plastic or styrofoam (ditch the microwave); plastic food wrap or water/soda bottles; food that is not organic; soy and ground flax seed; non-eco laundry detergent, dryer sheets, fabric softener, personal care products with parabens or phenoxyethanol in them, coffee (even decaff), tea and colas; sunflower, safflower, cottonseed and canola oils (use olive oil);  sage and rosemary; most sunscreens (cover up with a hat and long sleeves, instead).

Here is your to do list:
Cut processed foods and alcohol from your diet. Eat lots of organic fruits and vegetables, or if possible make fresh organic green juice. Take gentle exercise each day and have at least 8 hours sleep.

Secondly, get constitutional homeopathic care. Your homeopath will help match your situation and the symptoms you are experiencing to an appropriate remedy. Here are just some remedies your homeopath may consider.

In some instances women experience pain that alternates sides with each cycle. Two remedies that may be of use in this type of situation are Colocynthis, if there is a strong desire to bend double to ease the pain or Lac caninum if there are other factors that point to it as a remedy, for example symptoms in the breasts and throat.

If the pain is always right-sided two remedies that may be considered are Apis, which often has a stinging type of pain and Podophyllum, where the pain may be accompanied by an explosive kind of diarrhea.

As with any case your homeopath will not just consider the ovarian cyst in isolation, but will marry together all of the other aspects of your case, including emotional factors, to get the very best remedy for you.

You developed a painful ovarian cyst after you had a sexual encounter that you felt very guilty about? Then the remedy might be Kali-bromatum.  You have a cyst and you also experience overwhelming jealousy about your partner and can’t bear to have anything tight-fitting at your throat? Then the remedy could be Lachesis. Perhaps, there was a past history of gonorrhea and you have had a very poor memory since the cyst developed? This would indicate a remedy called Medhorrinum.

Every factor is a vital clue, so remember to be open and honest with your homeopath so they have all the pieces of the puzzle, even if it is information that feels personal and you may not normally wish to share.

Wishing you well,
Mary

Homeopathy and the Menopause

homeopathy and the menopause
Homeopathy not only works wonders during times of hormonal transition, it’s also safe and side effect-free.

If I had to choose my top three homeopathic remedies for easing menopausal symptoms they would probably be Lachesis, Sepia and Pulsatilla, because all three of them have such a great affinity with the female hormonal system.

Lachesis

Suits women who always felt good once their periods got started and have never really felt 100% well since the menopause. There is a pent up kind of feeling that can lead them to express themselves in sharp, if witty, words. Those needing Lachesis are prone to severe hot flashes and sometimes have a burning sensation at the top of their heads. If they can perspire they will feel better for doing so. They hate tight clothing, especially around the neck. There may be a purplish hue to their faces. Emotionally they may fall prey to suspicion and jealousy. Often the worst time of day is on waking up.

Sepia
This is for women who feel washed out and totally weak. Hot flashes lead to perspiration. Their hair is prone to falling around the time of menopause. Often their exhaustion leads them to want to escape from drudgery and family commitments, a la Shirley Valentine and if escape is not possible they will often be irritable with their nearest and dearest. The most difficult time is in the late afternoons.

Pulsatilla
Is another useful remedy for any major hormonal transition, including puberty, pregnancy and menopause. In the peri-menopausal phase menstrual problems may develop. Uterine pains may be a feature of the menopause. Pulsatilla works best for those who tend to be indecisive and love having emotional support and company. They enjoy fresh air. They seem to aggravate around the twilight hour.

HOT, HOT, HOT

Since hot flashes are extremely common during menopause it’s worth also looking at some homeopathic remedies that have a “hot” reputation.

Apis, made from the honey bee, is not surprisingly good for sudden severe flushes of heat.
Belladonna has hot flashes with profuse perspiration and a tendency to throbbing pains.
Phosphorus has hot flashes due to emotions, often brought on by being overly empathetic.
Sulphur has night sweats, and often insomnia, brought on by the heat of the bed.

DEHYDRATION

If your hot flashes come with profuse perspiration dehydration remember that China is the number one remedy for weakness, and an over-sensitive nervous system, brought on by dehydration.

EMOTIONAL FIRST AID

Aconite is helpful if hot flashes bring on terrible panic attacks and anxiety.
Ignatia may ease melancholia, depression and hysteria during menopause, think of this remedy if there is bereavement or a broken heart.
Nat mur helps those whose display of grief is less public. Useful for those who dwell on past upsets and weep privately.

To get the best results the remedy you choose should match your particular symptoms as accurately as possible. Take only one pill and wait to see if it helps. If it does help, but later the same symptoms return that is a signal to take a second pill.

If nothing you see here matches your experience, please don’t despair, a professional homeopath will be able to find a great match just for you from the many thousands of remedies we have in our Materia Medica. Here is a testimonial from a client who needed an unusual remedy that truly worked wonders:

“My hot flashes came on very suddenly. I was at the age where I was expecting them and thought it was something you just have to go through. I didn’t want to take drugs and then I had heard about Mary’s work. I had a session with her and lo and behold after taking the remedy I had just one more hot flash and absolutely none since. It was simple, painless and effortless. I don’t even think about hot flashes now. I am 100% satisfied and looking forward to even more improvements in my health. Now I am able to live my life without having to experience these things we are told we must endure. There is no need to suffer. Homeopathy really works.”

World Homeopathy Awareness Week 2013

Just one of many beautiful tributes to Kavi on his FB memorial page

This week homeopaths around the world will celebrate WHAW (World Homeopathy Awareness Week) starting tomorrow, the anniversary of founder Samuel Hahnemann’s birth, on April 10th.

They will also pay tribute to a great homeopath, humanitarian and friend who died on March 2nd.
The focus for this year is Homeopathy for Trauma and Disasters. All over the world dedicated homeopaths are working in non-profits that bring healing to those in the most dire need.

Kavi preparing to help Haitian earthquake victims
Kavi with a stack remedy kits donated by Miroslav Posavec. Both Kavi and the kits headed for Haiti to help earthquake victims there.

Sadly,  one of these dear souls, Vaikunthanath Kaviraj is now no longer with us. Kavi will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and his tireless philanthropic work.

Kavi in Haiti

Debby Bruck, founder of Homeopathy World Community and a staunch supporter of his emergency response work recalls, “Kaviraj started the Haiti Relief Group and whenever he heard about some natural disaster around the globe, he was ready to pick up at a moment’s notice and go there.”

Kavi's best selling book Homeopathy for Farm and Garden
Kavi’s legacy is his great guide to homeopathy for plants

Kavi’s other great contribution to Homeopathy was his writing on AgroHomeopathy. If you would like to show your appreciation for his life and work please visit and “Like” this memorial page, set up by his dear friend and colleague Iman Navab.

Iman has also invited people to join him tomorrow (April 10th) for a worldwide online celebration of Kavi’s extraordinary life.

People who have had personal experience of Homeopathy know how much it can help both people (and plants) in a wide range of emergency situations. Here is a very brief list of remedies that you may find helpful to have on hand.

  • Arnica 30c of 200c is #1 for bruising, shock, exhaustion and physical trauma
  • Calendula 30c or 200c lowers the risk of infection in wounds
  • Hypericum 30c or 200c is good for nerve injuries and whiplash
  • Silica 30c or 200c forces out splinters
  • Aconite 30c or 200c  helps with intense panic attacks
  • Arsenicum 30c or 200c reduces anxiety and restlessness
  • Ignatia 30c or 200c  eases emotional shocks met with a sense of disbelief

In honor of Hahnemann’s birthday and WHAW 2013 I will be doing a Webinar with Live Q&A on Saturday 13th April, 2013. It will start at 11am West Coast time, 2pm East Coast time and 7pm GMT (UK). To join in all you need is a computer with speakers or headphones. Just before the start time please go to http://tinyurl.com/homeopathyworldlive

Happy Homeopathy Awareness Week to all you lovers and supporters of Homeopathy. I will leave you all with a poem of mine, dedicated to Kavi.

Homeopathy is for Nature lovers
Kavi loved the Earth and was its staunch defender against destructive forces motivated by shortsighted greed

Of all the planets
In all the galaxies
I am here on this one
Spinning its days around the sun
It’s nights bathed in moonlight
Calling the tides to ebb and flow
I sink my feet in forest floors
Bathe them in sweet streams
Soaking up its infinite wonders
And ever grateful
That for a time
You traveled with me

RIP Kavi

Homeopathy and Concussion

Homeopathy and head injury
Alex, aged 16, in the lead

Just today I got this great tip in an e mail from Motocross Mom Pamela Jeffery that I wanted to share with you all:

“My boys aged 21, 19 and 16 all race motocross. I’ve been using natural remedies for the past 12 years and have found cayenne pepper dabbed on their tongue after a crash will pull them out of shock and trauma.

Call me crazy, but it has alleviated the signs of concussions as well.  I also use Arnica along with the pepper. My 21 year old just came home with a puncture wound to his stomach from a clutch lever on his bike. It was 24 hours old by the time I saw it. I soaked the gauze with colloidal silver and looked up “puncture wound”it said to use Calendula ointment and I have been giving him Traumeel tablets. I’m ordering your emergency kit, but praise God in the last 12 years of racing most of my remedies are used on others! Although I always want to be prepared!”

Homeopathy and first aid
Pam’s sons, from left Eric,21, Alex 16 and Lucas,18 pictured here
with their Dad, Scott. A handsome group of lads!

As a mother of a dedicated skateboarder I am sure I am just one of many parents out there who will appreciate your cayenne pepper trick, Pamela!  For the record, Ledum is a really great puncture wound remedy, so I would give that as well.

Since you’ve brought up the subject of concussion I thought I’d take a quick look at some of the main remedies you might need besides the mighty Arnica, which should always be given after any type of physical shock or trauma. For best results give one pillule and only repeat if the symptoms are clearly better, but then return again.

If the injury give you a throbbing headache try taking Belladonna.

Thankfully most concussions resolve fairly swiftly, but if following a concussion you continue to be plagued by severe head aches take Natrum sulph in a 30c or 200c potency.

Head trauma is often accompanied by whiplash to the neck. Since the neck and spine are very nerve rich areas it is good to give a dose of Hypericum after a concussion, especially if there is any kind of shooting nerve pain.

If it feels as if the injury has also strained the muscles of your neck and back and caused stiffness take a dose of Rhus tox.

If there is a sense that the injury nearly killed you and you feel very fearful even after the immediate danger has passed, take Aconite.

Always remember, these types of injury are potentially dangerous and if you have any concerns please be sure to get things thoroughly checked out by a medical professional. Even if a concussion leads to serious ongoing problems such as memory loss, coma or seizures, homeopathy can still help restore health and well being. In fact it is highly complementary to emergency care, so don’t despair.  Seek the help of a qualified homeopath to work alongside the trauma team.

If you or someone in your family is into sports or other forms of daring do, check out our Starter kit, Deluxe kit (both cover a wide range of injuries and minor illnesses) and our Accident and Emergency kit.

Homeopathy and Flu – Part 1

Cold snowy weather heralds the flu season
Stay cozy and warm, the flu season is upon us.

“We have over-promoted and over-hyped this vaccine,”
Michael T. Osterholm, Director, Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy & Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance.
“It does not protect as promoted. It’s all a sales job: it’s all public relations.”

Homeopathy and Flu Vaccine Injury

doctor preparing toxic injection
Thinking of having a flu shot, or giving one to a family member? Educate yourself first.

Flu is back in the news again and there is a lot of media and government pressure for us all to have flu shots, but is it a wise approach?

I want to share with you one of my client’s experiences. She was a woman of thirty-five and the mother of young children. She came for an appointment with me saying she had been ill since having a flu vaccination nine months earlier.

Immediately after the shot she developed chest pain. When she came to see me, she still had a shooting pain behind her left breast and pain in her right breast extending down her right arm.

At the same time, she had developed a strong fear of cancer and of what would happen to her children if she died. She was generally anxious and bit her nails.

She also had a history of mouth ulcers, stiff knees, and a blocked nose with post-nasal drip. She was very prone to catching colds and was generally a chilly person.
